The Future for ClashMEP and MEP Coordination Workflows

This article was written by Brett Young, CEO at BuildingSP, an Ideate, Inc. partner.

BuildingSP is working on very exciting process improvements in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) space for building information modeling (BIM). I want to give you a view of what we’re working on and how we intend to change construction.

In the last several months, we’ve developed and released ClashMEP, a dynamic clash detection tool for the Autodesk Revit platform. ClashMEP differentiates itself from other clash detection tools in the following ways:
  • Real-time. ClashMEP works as the user models, so feedback on clashes is real-time.
  • Meta-data. Integration of clash detection at the modeling level increases available meta-data associated with a clash instance.
  • Connected. Various types of Revit file sharing, like Collaboration for Revit (C4R), allow for immediate model updates and clash collaboration.
ClashMEP is a break-out tool for clash detection because it removes a separate workflow from the BIM coordination process. It changes the milestone-like “batch” and file-based mentality of clash detection and creates a continuous process within the modeling platform. On its own merits, ClashMEP is a revolutionary product for the AEC industry.

We are not done yet with our work on real-time clash detection. The greater opportunity is to leverage ClashMEP’s differentiators and create a new platform for clash detection that aggregates clashes across the whole project, in real-time.

Here are what we see as the unique capabilities of this new platform:
  • Automatically Generate Clash Tracking. As soon as a clash is created, the clash can be tracked in the system. This changes clash management from a milestone-based system to one of a “clash ledger.”  Clashes are continuously tracked and managed rather than reported in batches.
  • Enhanced Accountability. Using meta-data from the modeling environment, we can more actively manage the clash process. The following information would be known for each clash:
    • The date and time the clash was created.
    • The name of the modeler who generated the clash.
    • The name of the modeler responsible for the other system.
    • The systems involved in the clash.
    • The files that were in use when the clash was generated.
  • Deeper Metrics. Measuring progress and open issues gives a high-level view of current conditions.  Many management methodologies (lean, agile, scrum) rely on metrics to determine progress along complex tasks. A ClashMEP-enabled clash tracker would provide metrics that are deeper, richer, and at a higher granularity than a tracker based on a milestone / batch paradigm.
  • Automatically Close a Clash Issue. Just like a clash can be opened as an issue when it is generated, a clash can be flagged as resolved when it is no longer a clash. Current clash management solutions rely on manual closing of issues, which creates an additional lag in the metrics as well as additional time. A ClashMEP-enabled clash tracker eliminates the manual input of closure and provides better metrics.
The analogy we’re using when talking with customers is of a “clash ledger.” This clash ledger would have an up-to-date, real time list of how many clashes are currently in the model. Management of these clashes can be filtered, sorted, triaged, and prioritized. For example, clashes over 2-weeks old represent a larger risk than clashes created in the last hour or day. A clash created without then-current models or incomplete model sets represents poor model discipline and can be rejected as a false positive for the originator to fix. Each clash would have meaningful data automatically attached to it. The amount of manual input would be very low, relying instead on automation.

We’re very excited about moving ClashMEP from where it is today and really changing the workflow. In AEC, we need a continuous process for management of our models, not the old paradigm of meeting-based clash coordination. All current users of ClashMEP get access to our new platform and we’re very near to announcing a release date. Get in contact with us so we can talk about your projects and how we change your BIM workflow.

Rethink Autodesk Dynamo Studio Software with BuildingSP’s Brett Young

Do you only think of Autodesk Dynamo Studio software as a visual scripting language that can simplify API programming for the Autodesk Revit platform? If so, Brett Young, the CEO and founder of BuildingSP, would like to challenge your perception.

Brett, who holds a BS in civil and environmental engineering from UC Berkeley, has extensive experience on this subject. He gained that experience by founding and managing Modulus Consulting, a BIM consulting firm, and from spending nine years managing large commercial construction projects for Cahill Contractors.

He believes Dynamo, and tools like it, will fuel disruption in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. When talking about disruption, he says, “flat labor productivity, a growing global population, and a tough labor marketplace for AEC are just a couple of indicators that we, as an industry, are experiencing significant changes on both the demand and supply side of our marketplace.” He adds, it is unlikely an outside force will quickly disrupt the industry’s core business, because the industry is very reliant on human systems. Instead, he believes, “individual companies will learn how to dominate their regional and vertical markets using a common formula of people-driven tech and human-centered automation.”

According to Brett, this is where Dynamo Studio software comes in: “It is human-centered automation – it scales what you do, makes you more competitive, and builds tools you control.”

Read the full article on the topic from Brett, “Why Dynamo by Autodesk Is Important for AEC.”

How Suite it Was

Autodesk recently announced it’s replacing the popular Design & Creation Suites with industry collections. So, why are they messing with a good thing?

The answer is easy: because they’re giving you something much better. They know you want to know soon as updates are available, understand what has changed, and have the option to incorporate changes at a time convenient to you. They also know you expect your mobile experience to be the same as your desktop experience and that you prefer to pay as you go

Industry collections give you all this and more.

Easily Select the Right Collection

You’ll see a big difference between Suites and collections as soon as you start exploring. You no longer need to evaluate a multitude of Suites and select a tier that best matches your needs. Now, simply select the collection for your industry: Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, Product Design Collection or the Media & Entertainment Collection.

Get More for Your Money

Industry collections, which are workflow focused instead of product focused, provide you with value that well exceeds the Premium Suites at a very competitive price.

Industry collections offer:

• Access to a wide selection of the most essential Autodesk software for your industry in a single collection that will evolve and get better over time.
• Continuous access to the latest software releases and enhancements through the Autodesk desktop app.
• More cloud services, enabling you to access powerful, flexible tools whenever and wherever you need them.
• The flexibility to choose single-user or multi-user access.
• The ability to grant shared access to cloud (for those who subscribe to a collection with multi-user access).
• The option to choose a term that works best for you (
monthly, quarterly, annual or multi-year).

Do you know what hasn't changed? All subscribers to Autodesk products will continue to receive previous version rights, global travel rights, technical support, and powerful administrative tools.

Gain a Competitive Advantage

I know change can be difficult, but this change is good. I recommend you embrace it: those who adopt collections will have access to more tools.

Contact me if you’d like to learn more about what industry collections can do for you. And keep an eye out for my next blog post with more on collections and licenses.

Phase Mapping Linked Revit Models in the Plan

Recently we had a support case here where all of the Phases were showing up in plan from a linked Revit Model and not being controlled by the current View setting in the Primary Model. The Primary Model and the Linked Model were created from the same Template with 6 Phases created with the same name in each. All of the Model elements were in the correct Phase and the all the Views were set to see only the Phase needed for that part of the project. What went wrong? Phase Mapping.

View the Autodesk Revit Help files for issues with phase mapping linked Revit models.

Ideate, Inc. Publishes Study in Success on PYATOK Winning New Business with Revit

SAN FRANCISCO, California – 5/6/2014 - Autodesk Gold Value Added Reseller Ideate, Inc., a solutions provider offering quality software, training, support and custom consulting services to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, today announced the publication of a new Study in Success, “Rapid Revit Implementation Fast-Tracks PYATOK to Winning New Business.”

Ideate customer PYATOK, an Oakland based architectural firm established by Michael Pyatok, FAIA in 1984, first began considering the advantages of Autodesk Revit and the full power of parametric modeling about a decade ago. The firm designs award-winning multi-family housing for families, students, and seniors with emphasis in affordable, college and university housing, and market-rate developments throughout the western US. PYATOK focuses on up-to-the-minute green building technologies, cutting-edge modeling processes, and participatory design methods. The firm’s principals decided that a trickle-in effect would not be effective, so they made the decision in 2007 to bring in Ideate, Inc. to facilitate the transition.

Curtis Caton, Principal, PYATOK explains, “Ideate was a big part of our support getting started with Revit, and it still is. Using Revit allows our team to spend more time thinking and getting into creative problem solving. Fast track implementation started paying off right away.”

The Study in Success addresses an array of PYATOK projects from their earliest in the Revit implementation process to the most recent. The sampling reveals how PYATOK used Revit to overcome compressed schedules, respond to unforeseeable project demands related to programmatic changes, surmount neighborhood pressures, and resolve inconsistencies between 2D design engineering partners and PYATOK.

Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc. says, “The PYATOK transition to Revit delivered an advantage that continues to propel this firm forward with a competitive edge for winning new business. Helping PYATOK implement Revit quickly so the firm can succeed beyond expectation has been especially gratifying.”

Ideate has published “Rapid Revit Implementation Fast-Tracks PYATOK to Winning New Business” online. Download the Study in Success at www.ideateinc.com/ideas/case.html

Ideate, Inc. Features Lionakis in Its First Ideate Explorer for Revit Study in Success

SAN FRANCISCO, California – 11/19/2013 - Ideate, Inc., a leading Autodesk Authorized Developer and Autodesk solutions provider offering quality software, training, support and custom consulting services to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry with a special focus on Building Information Modeling (BIM), today announced the publication of its first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success, “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit.”

California-based Lionakis has played a significant role in shaping the built environment throughout the State of California for more than a century. The multi-disciplined privately held firm specializes in architecture, engineering, interiors, planning, sustainability and graphics, and ranks in the top 25 of California’s leading architectural firms.

The firm’s Quality Control (QC) process provides a system for verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in its BIM files by planning, continued inspection, and corrective action as required. Lionakis’ approach to its BIM projects includes firm-wide standards and a Revit-strong design staff. It also includes an in-house Design Technology (DT) team of Revit experts who create and maintain the Lionakis Revit master template and help the entire staff keep their Revit projects standardized and clean.

In the same way that the DT team peers deeply into Lionakis’ Revit files, the Study in Success peers deeply into Lionakis’ QC processes, with special attention to the ways Lionakis ensures confidence and trust in ever more complex and potentially error-prone BIM models. AEC firms of all sizes and members of related industries will have special interest in the Study in Success.

Kirk Cox, Design Technology Application Manager, Design Technology Studio, Lionakis, explains the vital nature of QC by saying, “It is always best to get the project back on the right path so the team can be as productive as possible. Having an effective QA/QC process translates to dollars and cents at the end of the day.”

Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc., says, “While we have published many articles about Ideate BIMLink, this is our first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success. We are gratified that our solution is helping to ensure project accuracy, reduce errors and save time, and we are pleased that Ideate Explorer for Revit has become indispensable for Lionakis’ staff training. We are overwhelmingly delighted with our customer’s success, and we are honored to share Lionakis’ valuable QC insights with the AEC community.”

Ideate has published “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit” online. Download the Study in Success at http://www.ideateinc.com/ideas/case.html.

Ideate Software will be at Autodesk University, December 3-5, 2013, Booth 1913, The Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Measure Twice – Cut Once – Think Always

It is better to think twice, before executing once.

There is an old adage in construction that says it is better to measure twice and cut once. If you have ever done a home improvement project, you have experienced this. The haste to get the job done has led to waste in time (it took longer), materials, and sometimes sanity (increased stress).

In business consulting I hear all the time the following…

  • We have really smart people, they can just execute.
  • Planning takes too long – it will cost money.
  • We will use our past process, it will be okay.
All of these strategies are a cut once and hope it fits process, and destined to either fail or take longer and cost more.

My attorney, Sherman Knight, during my times of great legal strife, always used the military phrase “Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.” What he was trying to get me to understand is that planning (thinking) makes for better doing (performance).

Planning, and the associated thinking required, is more critical than the immediacy of starting the execution of the task or project. Risks need to be identified, as well as opportunities. Strategies can be reviewed and developed that will more than accelerate the project completion.

How do we start the planning process:
  • What is the realistic schedule, which is usually different than the “desired” schedule. How will resources be allocated.
  • Who are the other stakeholders, and what information and buy-in is required for a successful project.
  • What are all the risks of the project, how will the risks be mitigated – and most importantly – what new processes will be needed to complete the project.
    • New technologies may be needed, or required to complete the work.
    • Time spent training resources on the new process, pays dividends over “they will learn as they go along.” The key here is to have the training as close to the execution of the work.
How many times do we just “wing it” and hope for the best outcome? Far too often. Planning, before doing, needs to become your personal, and company #1 best practice.
