The collection and management of building data, including the requirements for rooms, equipment, and other needs, as it evolves from early design through construction documentation and as a basis for facility management, can be enhanced through advanced techniques in Autodesk Revit software. This includes linking to an external data source, automating the creation of areas and rooms, creating room data sheets, and other graphic and non-graphic processes that complement BIM. This class covers basic database theory, the structure of objects and their relation to data management, and Revit techniques for implementing this general theory in actual projects. We will also discuss third-party software and customizations, and how they are used to further advance these processes. The class goes beyond learning Revit commands and looks at the underlying information requirements of emerging integration in project delivery.
This is a repeat of a class presented at Autodesk University in December of last year.
Who Should Attend
The class will be of interest to AEC industry professionals and software developers who are concerned with how information is managed. The topics are fairly advanced and theoretical, not focused on learning Revit commands.

Ideate, Inc. Features Lionakis in Its First Ideate Explorer for Revit Study in Success
SAN FRANCISCO, California – 11/19/2013 - Ideate, Inc., a leading Autodesk Authorized Developer and Autodesk solutions provider offering quality software, training, support and custom consulting services to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry with a special focus on Building Information Modeling (BIM), today announced the publication of its first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success, “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit.”
California-based Lionakis has played a significant role in shaping the built environment throughout the State of California for more than a century. The multi-disciplined privately held firm specializes in architecture, engineering, interiors, planning, sustainability and graphics, and ranks in the top 25 of California’s leading architectural firms.
The firm’s Quality Control (QC) process provides a system for verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in its BIM files by planning, continued inspection, and corrective action as required. Lionakis’ approach to its BIM projects includes firm-wide standards and a Revit-strong design staff. It also includes an in-house Design Technology (DT) team of Revit experts who create and maintain the Lionakis Revit master template and help the entire staff keep their Revit projects standardized and clean.
In the same way that the DT team peers deeply into Lionakis’ Revit files, the Study in Success peers deeply into Lionakis’ QC processes, with special attention to the ways Lionakis ensures confidence and trust in ever more complex and potentially error-prone BIM models. AEC firms of all sizes and members of related industries will have special interest in the Study in Success.
Kirk Cox, Design Technology Application Manager, Design Technology Studio, Lionakis, explains the vital nature of QC by saying, “It is always best to get the project back on the right path so the team can be as productive as possible. Having an effective QA/QC process translates to dollars and cents at the end of the day.”
Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc., says, “While we have published many articles about Ideate BIMLink, this is our first Ideate Explorer for Revit-focused Study in Success. We are gratified that our solution is helping to ensure project accuracy, reduce errors and save time, and we are pleased that Ideate Explorer for Revit has become indispensable for Lionakis’ staff training. We are overwhelmingly delighted with our customer’s success, and we are honored to share Lionakis’ valuable QC insights with the AEC community.”
Ideate has published “One Secret Ingredient in Lionakis’ Quality Control—Ideate Explorer for Revit” online. Download the Study in Success at http://www.ideateinc.com/ideas/case.html.
Ideate Software will be at Autodesk University, December 3-5, 2013, Booth 1913, The Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Autodesk Revit Isn't Just for Architects - Contractors & Landscape Architects Get BIM Ready
From Ron Palma, AEC Solutions Application Specialist:
Happy New Year!
For 2010, the final class I taught was in our Seattle Autodesk Authorized Training Center, the three days before the New Year's holiday. I had a wonderful group of folks from Sellen Construction Company and Johnson Braund Design Group, Inc. The students were a mix of contractors and landscape architects. No architects or designers...a first!
The class was our three day Revit Architecture Fundamentals course, which teaches the essentials of knowing and working with Autodesk Revit Architecture. This particular class was interesting - I had a chance to interact with a non-traditional design group. The contractors were there to get an overview of Revit Architecture and how it works. It is important for them to understand why they are getting the types of construction documents they are, from firms claiming to use Revit Architecture. Although the firms that the contractors are working with claim to use Revit software, the design firms may not be using the application to its fullest potential or even correctly. Our class gave the contractors the knowledge of what Revit Architecture can do and how contractors can create a better working relationship with their clients.
From the landscape architects' point of view, I have had a chance to teach Revit to the majority of Johnson Braund Design Group, Inc. Last week's student from the firm was attending to get an overview of Revit software. She let me know it was a fun class, since she did not know anything about architecture or putting a building together. She not only learned how to work in Revit Architecture, but also got some architecture knowledge out of it as well!
Overall, a very satisfying way to end the year! BIM rocks!
In addition to being one of our senior Autodesk 2011 Certified Professionals, Ron regularly teaches at Autodesk University. At AU2010, he was joined by Lana Gochenauer, LEED AP, Ideate MEP Solutions Application Specialist to present There Is No "I" in Team.

Ron Palma has more than 23 years of experience in the architectural industry as a drafter, designer, lead project designer and trainer; most recently a CAD manager implementing Autodesk Architectural Desktop for a residential design firm. Ron's instructional background includes being an Autodesk Certified Instructor, trainer, support technician, educator at Portland Community College and Clackamas Community College, and a U.S. Army certified instructor. Ron is a published writer and continues to author professional technical training manuals for AutoCAD and AutoCAD Architecture. Ron provides Revit Architecture training and support for AEC firms.

Mastering Revit Architecture 2011: Teresa Martin on Shared Coordinates

We really like the newly released Autodesk Official Training Guide Mastering Revit Architecture 2011 by Eddy Krygiel, Phil Read and James Vandezande.
And, we're especially pleased to see that our own Ideate Tech Expert Teresa Martin is quoted in the Shared Positioning description:
In the collaborative process of sharing information via linked models, the coordinated positioning of each model is of paramount importance. Agreement on a common coordinate system and origin must be included in every project's BIM execution plan to ensure accuracy. This section will help you develop a fundamental understanding of the coordinate systems within Revit so you can configure and manage them in your projects. For a more complete history of coordinate systems and various examples of using them within Revit, we recommend the following class material from Autodesk University 2009, available at http://au.autodesk.com/:• AB118-3 Finding Your Way Around Shared Coordinates, By Teresa Martin, Ideate Inc.
• AB9114-1 Autodesk Revit Collaboration: Shared Coordinates for Projects Big and Small, By Steve Stafford, AEC Advantage, Inc.There are two coordinate systems in a Revit project:project internal and shared. Each system has essential features and limitations.
Project Internal Every Revit project has an internal coordinate system referred to in several places as Project. You can find this reference in the type properties of datum measuring objects such as levels and spot coordinates as well as in the settings for exporting CAD files. The project coordinate system cannot be changed and your model should be constructed within a one mile radius of the project origin. The true origin in Revit is referred to as the Project Start Up Point and the Project Base Point can be reset to this point by setting it to unclipped, rightclicking on the icon and selecting Move To Start Up Location.
A complementary component of the project internal coordinate system is the view orientation of Project North. This setting is the default and can be found in the View Properties of any plan. We strongly recommend that your model is created in an orthogonal relationship to project north or as you expect the plans to be oriented on a typical sheet. Your project's actual relation to True North will be established via shared coordinates.
Shared Coordinates According to Ideate's Teresa Martin, "shared coordinates are simply a way for the project team to utilize the same definitive work point." In other words, the shared coordinate system consists of a single origin and true north orientation which can be synchronized between models and even AutoCAD drawings.
