AutoCAD 2010 – Performance wins for architects

Keeping ahead in the current economic climate is a challenge that we all have to address. The last thing you need is to be let down by slow delivery or poor presentation.

Skipping a software release is often posed as an economy measure, but it is one that can backfire if it leaves you without access to the latest efficiency improvements. Delivering quality projects on time and within budget needs those tools to produce the results required by today’s demanding clients.

Autodesk has released an AutoCAD 2010 Productivity Study which is the result of research and analysis undertaken by Cambashi, an independent consulting and analyst firm with offices in the UK and the US. The firm has taken a close look at the capabilities of AutoCAD 2010. Working with an architectural practice, Cambashi devised and carried out a productivity study comprised of a series of tests to investigate the benefits of AutoCAD 2010 for the architect. By making a comparison with an earlier release of AutoCAD, specifically AutoCAD 2007, the tests have been able to show where real progress towards business goals can be achieved.

From start to finish, leading structural engineering firms keep pace through diversification and maximizing teamwork

    By Lynn Petrak

Not all finish lines lead from a straight path. Some races are run on circular tracks, while others cut through jagged terrain. Those competing in boating regattas must adjust their sails and speed based on the prevailing winds and weather.

The same can be said for performances turned in by businesses, including structural engineering firms. As the end of another year approaches, structural engineering practices that have survived one of the most difficult climates and rockiest roads to success have gotten to that point by fine-tuning strategies, constantly finding ways to move forward and benefitting from, as in some sporting races, a bit of luck.

AU 2009 - Better Decisions, Better Buildings by David Haynes

“This year, Autodesk has selected six members of the Ideate technical team to present seven classes at AU. We are thrilled to have so many of our expert staff members invited,” says Bob Palioca, President, Ideate, Inc.

Better Decisions, Better Buildings, Early Energy Analysis
Studies show that most crucial decisions happen in the first moments of the design process. Architects need tools that will assist them in creating better and more sustainable building projects. This lecture will focus on which tools are available, when to use them, and how to get the maximum benefit from these energy analysis tools. To make better, more energy efficient, sustainable buildings, we need to make better strategic decisions early.

    Primary Software: Autodesk Ecotect
    Other Software: Revit Architecture

Presented by David Haynes, AIA, LEED AP, Ideate Director of AEC Services

David previously had his own practice and was President of a commercial design-build construction company for 15 years. A graduate of University of Arizona, he has worked as an Architect, contractor, developer, educator, and as a national construction manager for a national retailer. Signature Styles and Entourage for Impression
Illustrations you use to communicate your ideas to your client carry the signature of your firm in every brush and pencil stroke they contain. In this class, Ron will show how to achieve a dynamic and personal look to your presentation illustrations. The creation of unique Autodesk Impression appearance styles, and how to create libraries of these signature styles will be covered in this class. Entourage elements such as furniture, trees, cars, and people add life to your illustrations. Methods for bringing your current image-based entourage libraries into Impression blocks, and techniques for creating a signature look for custom Impression blocks and block libraries will also be covered.

AutoCAD vs. AutoCAD LT - hatching, printing

Our customers often ask us whether they should buy AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT? There's lots of good data out there regarding the differences, like AutoCAD 2010 vs. AutoCAD 2010 LT matrix, but sometimes it's hard to read between the lines if you haven't used both products.

Recently a customer asked specifically about the differences with respect to hatching and printing. I needed to dig around for the answer and thought it was worth sharing:

    - AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT ship with identical versions of the hatch (.pat) file so out of the box they have the same hatch patterns available. (NOTE: AutoCAD Architecture does ship with over 100 additional hatches that are architect-specific.)
    - Printing and Batch Printing are the same in AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD.
    - One difference worth noting however, is that AutoCAD LT does not have a Sheet Set Manager.

I can't imagine working without the Sheet Set Manager (SSM) on projects with more than five sheets. For eTransmitting, Printing, and Publishing the SSM saves tons of time.

For more info on the nuances between AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, I’ve found that LT Help is a good resource.

Great event by Portland CSI at ZGF's Office

This month's Portland CSI chapter meeting was a Project Tour of the new Twelve West building. We had a chance to meet the architects responsible for the design, representatives of Hoffman Construction and key subcontractors. It was fascinating to learn about everything from the siting (choosing the less traveled side of Burnside), to the distinctive entry staircase to the carefully chosen materials. It is a thoughtful and well executed project, designed for long-term sustainability.

The tour concluded with a presentation by John Breashears and Craig Briscoe of ZGF on the wind turbines atop the Twelve West building. With no precedent for wind turbines on a tall building in an urban environment, the ZGF project team had to forge their own path - learning about turbine technology, wind patterns, construction techniques...you name it. The result is a set of four wind turbines that will produce enough electricity to power five of the building's residential apartments. What is almost more important than the resulting power generation, is the fact that turbines are there and will be tracked over time - a reference point and baseline for future projects.

Compliments to Portland CSI, ZGF and all the tour speakers for a well done event.

    Chapter Meeting
Project Tour: Zimmer, Gunsul, Frasca, Architects, LLP Office at Twelve West
    Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Twelve West Building 1223 SW Washington StreetPortland, OR 97205

Rising 23 stories above Portland, Oregon’s evolving West End neighborhood, TwelveWest is a mixed-use building designed to meet two LEED Platinum Certifications and serve as a laboratory for integrated sustainable design. It features street level retail space, four floors of office space for ZGF Architects LLP, 17 floors of “eco-chic,” homes for lease and five levels of below grade parking. The building has an eco-roof, rooftop garden and terrace space, complete fitness studio and a theatre. Four visible wind turbines sit high atop the building representing the first U.S. installation of small-scale wind turbines in an urban, high-rise. TwelveWest serves as not only an anchor in a rapidly transforming urban neighborhood, but also as a demonstration project to inform future sustainable building design.

    The Solar Decathlon Begins Today!

More great updates from Washington, D.C.

    The Solar Decathlon begins today!

After two years of planning, designing, engineering, and building, our SCU+CCA Team California is ready to welcome the world through the doors of Refract House on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.! Team California was one of only 9 teams (of the 20 participants) to pass all inspections in order to be eligible to begin competing today. More great news: Student Project Manager Allison Kopf (SCU ’11) has the honor of joining Energy Secretary Steven Chu to address the crowd at the Opening Ceremonies. And, as if that were not enough, SCU and CCA students were thrilled to learn that CBS will be interviewing Secretary Chu for its news program 60 Minutes (which boasts more than 9 million viewers!) in OUR SOLAR HOUSE this morning! We will post the air date and more information soon. Our student team is making us proud—working around the clock on getting the house ready for competition and visitors, talking with media, and preparing for the blitz that is the Solar Decathlon.

Sure to be a topic of buzz on the National Mall, one of the innovations being introduced in our 2009 entry is a carbon meter. Thanks to a grant from the California Energy Commission, Santa Clara University has been working with
SolarTech (a PV industry consortium) to develop this concept. Over the past year, it has been developed and tested on SCU's campus on our 2007 Solar Decathlon entry, Ripple House. With great results being achieved, students were excited to install the meter on Refract House to measure carbon offsets at real-time rates. In the future, it is expected this type of monitoring will allow homeowners to be compensated for saving energy while contributing to the health of the planet, enabling a potential economy of carbon cap and trade.

News Flash: On October 9, 5-6 p.m. EST, student team members will be available on facebook and gchat (refracthouse) to answer your questions. They are looking forward to hearing from you!

Keep track of the overall standings here.
Watch this fun video from The Washington Post showing our SCU and California flags waving, and our student, Preet Anand (SCU ’10) getting the last word! More on our team in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. A great photo of our team with Secretary Chu here: cnet news and an interview with NPR.
