Rethink Autodesk Dynamo Studio Software with BuildingSP’s Brett Young
Do you only think of Autodesk Dynamo Studio software as a visual scripting language that can simplify API programming for the Autodesk Revit platform? If so, Brett Young, the CEO and founder of BuildingSP, would like to challenge your perception.
Brett, who holds a BS in civil and environmental engineering from UC Berkeley, has extensive experience on this subject. He gained that experience by founding and managing Modulus Consulting, a BIM consulting firm, and from spending nine years managing large commercial construction projects for Cahill Contractors.
He believes Dynamo, and tools like it, will fuel disruption in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. When talking about disruption, he says, “flat labor productivity, a growing global population, and a tough labor marketplace for AEC are just a couple of indicators that we, as an industry, are experiencing significant changes on both the demand and supply side of our marketplace.” He adds, it is unlikely an outside force will quickly disrupt the industry’s core business, because the industry is very reliant on human systems. Instead, he believes, “individual companies will learn how to dominate their regional and vertical markets using a common formula of people-driven tech and human-centered automation.”
According to Brett, this is where Dynamo Studio software comes in: “It is human-centered automation – it scales what you do, makes you more competitive, and builds tools you control.”

Dynamo and Revit 2017
Dynamo is a visual programming platform that gives you the ability to visually script behavior, define custom pieces of logic and script using various textual programming languages. It is now fully integrated with Revit 2017 and does not require an additional download. No longer just an add-in to Revit, it can now be found in the Manage tab, Visual Programming panel.
If you have already installed Revit 2017, you will not be able to immediately see Dynamo in the Manage tab. First, you will have to rerun the Dynamo installer and make sure to check Revit 2017 to add Dynamo to this new install.
Once the installation is complete, launch Revit 2017 and Dynamo should be available to you in the Manage tab, Visual Programming panel.
Checkout this quick video with step-by-step instructions on installing Dynamo for Revit 2017.

Formula-Driven Surface Boundaries in Revit Using Dynamo
The new release of Dynamo 0.7 expands the ability to create script driven forms in REVIT. Here is the tutorial Part I of my Dynamo presentation at the San Francisco Revit User Group in June 2014, showing how to build a mass surface using reference lines driven by Math formulas.

East Bay Revit User Group - Dynamite Assemblies: Creating Parametric Components Using Dynamo
Dynamo is an open source language that extends Building Information Modeling with the data and logic environment of a visual algorithm editor. Dynamo enables non-programmers to visually script behavior, define custom pieces of logic, and script conceptual design. We will discuss the basic concepts of Dynamo and demonstrate how the tool enables designers to create and control parametric assemblies from conceptual geometry.
