Use the Windows Event Viewer to Help Troubleshoot Software Crashes

Here’s a quick tip to help troubleshoot software crashes.
  1. Use Windows’ Event Viewer to shed light on the crash in Control Panel> System and Security> Administrative Tools.
  2. Click Event Viewer.
  3. On the left pane expand Windows Logs and select Application.
  4. In the top middle pane scroll down to the date and time of the event.
In this case I found a Revit crash pertaining to a .NET error.

I hope this helps.  Enjoy!

Windows XP and the End of an Era

Do you remember the first day you started using Windows XP? I do, and it was like taking a giant “jump to lightspeed” leap into the future of operating systems. It was a whole new world of richly rendered windows, dialog boxes, and that Start button. That start button was crystal clear! All this magnification coming from what seemed like the dark ages of Windows 95 (I did miss that Weezer video, however…).

Although my XP days seem like they were yesterday, it was over 12 years ago Microsoft released Windows XP to the public. As all good things must come to an end, today Microsoft officially ends support for Windows XP, which for many users was Microsoft’s greatest OS of all time.

So, what does that mean for you as an Autodesk software user and an Ideate customer? Ideate Technical Support will still provide assistance for Autodesk software supported on Windows XP to the best of our ability, but can not guarantee a full issue resolution.

Autodesk 2014 products were the last to be supported on Windows XP. 2015 products are supported on Windows 7 and 8/8.1 only. For Ideate’s OS recommendations, take a look at our Migrating to Autodesk 2015 software doc.

For those of you that are still holding onto those glory days of XP, or those unable to make that next OS jump, I assure you the future is bright. Windows 7 in my opinion is a great operating system. I’m even starting to get a little warm and fuzzy about Windows 8.1. Although it maybe a little early, I’ve already heard some interesting hints of Windows 9 on the horizon.

Farewell Windows XP. You will always have a special place in our hearts, but it's time we move on.

Autodesk 2015 Products Require Network License Manager Version 11.12

Autodesk has been rolling out the new 2015 software, but this year is a little different – especially if you have network licenses of the software. In past years you would need to request a new license file, place it on your license server, configure LMtools to look to the new license and restart the service, and users would be able to pull licenses for the latest release. Although it is a best practice to upgrade the version of the license manager with each release, not many people do it. When you do upgrade, it’s typically because there is an issue and is part of the troubleshooting process. In fact, here at Ideate, Inc. I only upgrade our license servers every 2-3 years.

But like I said, this year is different. Autodesk now requires the latest version of the Network License Manager, 11.12, for its 2015 products.

I’m not sure why this change was made, but we think it might have something to do with them using Flexera to build their network licenses. Flexera is a 3rd party license developer, and is actually the same licensing service we use for our Ideate Software applications.

For this year you’ll need to request a new license file and update your license server(s) to version 11.12. Take note of “server(s).” If you have a distributed license server system all license managers will need to be upgraded. Same goes for a redundant license server system.

A quick word on upgrading the server. In support I hear a lot of network admins saying they don’t want to upgrade/reinstall the license manager during business hours so users don’t lose a license. The license manager only communicates back and forth with users’ software to check to see if they have a valid license about every 15 minutes. This is called the heartbeat. This means you have a 15 minute window to do the upgrade. When I upgraded our license manager here it took me no more than 2 minutes.

License Manager version 11.12 can be found on your Autodesk media, download or physical under the “Tools and Utilities” section of the installer, or it can be downloaded here.

I hope this post has helped. Have fun with the new release!

Revit Server 2014 – What’s New

Since Revit Server was released a couple of years ago I’ve been seeing more and more customers implementing it across their offices. I provide Ideate’s Revit Server consulting and implementation services; and I was glad to see Revit Server is being further developed. But before we get into the latest 2014 release let’s briefly go over what Revit Server does and how it benefits users.

Revit Server allows multiple users across multiple locations within a single organization to collaborate on workshared projects. In normal file based worksharing users are working from the central model in a local area network (LAN). But when users outside the LAN within the organization’s wide area network (WAN) start working from the central model they’ll typically encounter file access errors, slow sync to central times, and in rare cases model corruption. To resolve these issues Autodesk developed Revit Server and server based worksharing. In server based worksharing Revit server silently manages the data going back and forth between users, accelerators, and hosts; to deliver a normal file based worksharing experience. For more information check out the Wiki: Revit Server – What It Is and What It Does.

So let’s take a look at what’s new with Revit Server 2014.

Windows Server 2012 Support
Revit Server is now fully supported on Windows Server 2012 which includes support for Internet Information Services (IIS) 8 and .NET 4.5. I actually like Server 2012, it took a little bit of getting used to, but overall I think it’s pretty good. Just like previous versions of Revit Server; 2014 needs specific Application and Web server prerequisite roles to be enabled. Here’s a good video I found going through this process in the new Server 2012 interface.

GUID Preservation
GUIDs (pronounced “goo-id”) are unique identifiers assigned to pieces of data.  In Revit Server GUIDs are assigned to each model hosted within the Revit Server network. Users see a file name but Revit Server sees the GUID. Now in 2014 when a user performs a Save As for a central model it will retain it’s original GUID.

Low Disk Space Warning
Revit Server 2014 now detects when disk space on the server is running low and will display a warning dialog.

Check out my quick video on these new features for Revit Server 2014.

For more information I recommend taking a look at the
Revit and Revit Server 2014 Wiki site. Enjoy!

Don’t forget to look through other great features our Ideate Technical Team has found in the new 2014 releases for Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Revit Structure, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Navisworks and more: ideateinc.com/2014
