US Survey Feet is Finally Here

As a Civil Engineer and Infrastructure Application Specialist at Ideate, I'm celebrating along with Surveyors, Mappers, and Civil Engineers in nine states… AutoCAD 2017 based products now support US Survey Feet!

It's been something we've wanted for years because many of us assign our drawings a State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS) using AutoCAD Map 3D or AutoCAD Civil 3D. US Survey Feet is preferred by California, Texas, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Indiana, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Wyoming. The issue up until now, was that although Map 3D and Civil 3D functionality understood coordinate systems, and the difference between a US Survey Foot and an International Foot, underlying AutoCAD did not. AutoCAD tools to attach External References, insert blocks, and ReCap point clouds, auto-scale based on International Feet. The difference between a US Survey Foot (~0.3048006 meters) and an International Foot (0.3048 meters exactly) is quite small. Yet it makes a significant difference when you are working in large state plane coordinate values for mapping and civil engineering projects.

Now the sobering news… because 'US Survey Feet' is a new unit to AutoCAD (INSUNITS=21), potentially undesired automatic scaling of Xrefs will occur if we are not careful. Why do I say that?

Externally referencing a ‘legacy’ engineering drawing (pre 2017), set to Intl Feet, into a 2017 'US Survey Feet' units drawing will now be automatically scaled, regardless of whether the application performing the reference is AutoCAD 2017, Map 3D 2017 or Civil 3D 2017. This will also occur even if the referenced drawing is assigned a coordinate system based on US Survey Feet. Remember that attaching an Xref is an AutoCAD based tool. The auto-scaling will not be obvious in the Attach External Reference dialog because the default Drawing Units length precision in most drawings is set to four decimal places.

Now, if you set your Drawing Units length precision to six decimal places, you'll see a scaling factor of 0.999998.

This is the ratio of Intl Feet to US Survey Feet, which comes to about 2 feet for every 1 million feet. It's negligible for low coordinate value drawings, but not for our state plane coordinate drawings.

In the below screen shot, I've externally referenced an Intl Foot drawing into a new 'US Survey Feet' drawing. Note that the coordinates of the same point differ by -12.51, -4.07.

Also note that 'US Survey Feet' is not understood by AutoCAD versions prior to 2017. You'll get the below warning upon changing the units. An AutoCAD 2017 created drawing can still be opened by AutoCAD 2013-2016.

Lastly, some of you may be aware of an old undocumented AEC command called -DWGUNITS. It's occasionally used to address block insertion scaling of 12x or 1/12 even when INSUNITS is correct in both drawings. Because it's old and undocumented, it does not include US Survey Feet.

Although it's great news that Autodesk finally added US Survey Feet to AutoCAD's supported units, we may not fully realize the benefit for a few more releases. Until then, I recommend setting the Drawing Units length precision to six decimal places for all drawings assigned US Survey Feet. Doing so will give you the visual prompt of the auto-scaling AutoCAD is about to perform.

Bringing Back the Welcome Screen in Autodesk Recap / Recap Pro

While I was in Autodesk Recap the other day, I decided that it was time to unlock the Recap Pro version so that I can enable some additional features that I was interested in playing with. I closed down ReCap and re-opened it, only to discover that the Welcome screen was nowhere to be found. I searched all over the interface and could not find any way to bring the Welcome screen back. I finally uninstalled and reinstalled the software and viola, the welcome screen came back. I decided to close the Welcome screen again to see if it would reappear upon launch, however, once I re-opened Recap, the Welcome screen was gone. No way was I going to uninstall and reinstall the software again just to bring the Welcome screen back. Instead, I decided to do a little digging around in the Windows Registry to see if I could find the value for the Welcome screen and surely enough, I did! After setting a value called ForceDisplayWelcome from 0 to 1, the Welcome screen re-appeared. Reinstalling the software was no longer needed, which saved a lot of time and hassle.

Before I run you through the steps of re-enabling the Welcome screen in Recap, I wanted to advise you that you will be playing around in the Windows Registry. Editing the Windows registry can cause your system to become unstable, or worse, unbootable. With that said, editing the Windows registry is at your own risk. If you have never edited the Windows Registry or do not feel comfortable doing so, I highly recommend that you consult your systems administrator for assistance. A quick Google Search on backing up your registry is advised before your proceed with the following steps.

This is what the Recap Welcome screen looks like when you first launch it. As you can see, there is a button to unlock ReCap Pro.

This is what ReCap looks like after closing the Welcome screen. Unfortunately, finding a way to bring the Welcome screen back seems impossible. Until now…

In the Windows Registry Editor, search for the registry string called: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Autodesk ReCap\R1.0\FirstLaunchApplication. Double-Click on the Value called ForceDisplayWelcome.

After you double-click on the ForceDisplayWelcome value, change the Value Data to 1. This will force the Welcome screen to open up next time you launch Recap.

After you relaunch Recap, the welcome screen will reappear. However, once you close it, it will not appear next time you launch Recap. This is because Recap reset the registry value back to 0. You will have to repeat the registry edit process again in order to get the Welcome screen back. Another option that you have is to create a .REG file that you can save to your computer. All you have to do is double-click on the .REG file to automatically change the ForceDisplayWelcome back to 1. To create the .REG file, set the ForceDisplayWelcome to 1 and then right-click on the FirstLaunchApplication. Then click on the Export button.

Once you click the Export button, simply browse to an appropriate location on your computer and save the .REG file. Be sure to note that we exported the Selected Branch value and not the entire contents within the FirstLaunchApplication folder. Once you save the file, you now have a .REG file that you can double-click on and apply to your machine.

New in 2014: Autodesk ReCap Part 2 – Key Features

In Part 1 of our ReCap posts, we discussed how this new application processes and combines laser scan files into a ReCap Project. Now we’re looking at some of the Key Features available once the projects are launched.

Along with standard navigational tools like pan, zoom, orbit, look, and fly-through, ReCap also has the capability of editing point cloud data; something that has not been a part of Autodesk software in the past.

Selection Tools
Annotation Tools
The bottom-center of the screen includes annotation tools for notes, distances, angles and faces, as well as selection tools for editing. Window and Fence tools can be used to easily crop or delete selected sections of the point cloud, quickly removing unwanted data and reducing file size.
Display Tools
The upper-left of the screen includes display options to control how the point cloud data appears in the application. The Project Navigator, Limit Box and Display Settings allow users to control which files from the dataset are displayed, how much of the data is displayed, point color, point size, background data, and lighting and shading effects.

With functionality similar to point cloud review and processing tools from Trimble and Leica, Autodesk customers now have access to a program that can process and edit point cloud data prior to being used in Autodesk design software like AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks and Autodesk InfraWorks. Best of all, it’s included in the 2014 Autodesk Design Suites and available now on Subscription Center.

For a video of Autodesk ReCap in action and other great features our Ideate Technical Team has found in the new Autodesk 2014 releases, visit: ideateinc.com/2014
Ideate Note: If you are experiencing a Fatal Error issue when trying to launch a ReCap project this is most likely based on system hardware rather than an issue with the application. For more information about this issue and Ideates solution, read our recent blog post titled: Help! Autodesk ReCap is Crashing.
