Quick Tip: AutoCAD 2014 and Navisworks NWC File Exporter

While we are all aware that you cannot export the .NWC file format directly from AutoCAD 2014 without installing either Navisworks or the NWC export utility, one thing that still makes me chuckle is after either is installed if you type in (at the AutoCAD command line) the command “NWNAVIGATOR” it will bring up into your AutoCAD session a great Navis Viewer. Which is in reality a temporary *.NWC file that you can navigate in. This is a very powerful feed-back tool when modeling.

Download the Autodesk Navisworks NWC export utility. Once the utility installs, the command “NWCOUT” will now be available!

Autodesk Products + Mac OS

Ideate, Inc. gets many questions about the use of Mac operating system (OS) and Autodesk products. There are Autodesk products, like AutoCAD for the Mac, which run natively on the Mac OS. However, many Autodesk products, including Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Navisworks, run only in a Windows OS environment. There seems to me an ever increasing number of Ideate customers with Mac laptop and desktop hardware.

PROBLEM: What are the ways to use Autodesk products in a Mac environment? What workflow does Autodesk support?

ANSWER: There are two ways to use Autodesk Products on a Mac.
  1. Apple Boot Camp This is free for Mac users. This provides for a ‘boot’ level decision for the user. You either boot into Windows or you boot into a MAC operating system. The total RAM on the computer is available to either Windows or Mac. Some users have found boot level decision problematic if they are using both Mac and Windows programs (because you have to reboot to go between Mac and Windows).
  2. Virtual Machine The two most popular products are Parallels and VM Ware. Either of these two programs cost under $100. The virtual machine approach allows you to run Windows ‘inside’ of the Mac OS. You can get about 75% of the RAM allocated to Windows, so having enough RAM is important. Users are able to run both Mac and Windows programs at the same time.
What Workflow Does Autodesk Support?
In the post ‘Parallels + Fusion + Boot camp + Autodesk Products’ from Autodesk, Autodesk Technical Support outlines the three ways to implement and which methodology is supported. Also note the work-around for those who prefer to point the virtual machine to the Mac Boot Camp partition.

Ideate will continue to monitor this situation and will keep you informed.

Autodesk Product Keys – Understanding the Relationship to Licensing

One of the subjects that we handle a lot in our technical support department at Ideate, Inc. is software licensing. We take these issues seriously and realize that the ins and outs of the process can be confusing. We try and educate our customers to the way that licensing is handled so that they can feel more confident in managing their software. As a result I wanted to clarify a subject that comes up often in technical support, software product keys.

Since their addition with the 2010 version of Autodesk software, the product keys have caused some confusion. The largest problem has been that if the software is installed with a product key that does not match the serial number it will fail to activate. The error message that is generated does not specifically indicate that this is the issue. This usually solicits a call into technical support and the product key is one of the first things that we verify. The second frustrating thing with this issue is that the software has to be completely reinstalled to change the product key that was used to install it. This is a more time-consuming fix than verifying that you are using the correct product key in the first place.

In order to mitigate this issue, Autodesk started having the installation checking the entered product key in 2012. This was done to prevent the user from going through the installation using the wrong product key. Unfortunately this can create its own issue, especially for those who were comfortable with the product key usage in the previous version.

The issue with the 2012 and newer software is that since the media will only allow you to use the product keys that match it you can’t also enter the product key for the serial number you are using. This can be a problem for users that have purchased a Suite and a point product. It means that you may not be able to use the media of one to install the other.

In general we have found that you can use the installation for a point product with the product key of an advanced version like a suite that it is contained in. For example, if you have a serial number for Building Design Suite Ultimate, but you only want to install Navisworks Manage you can use the Navisworks Manage installation media.  This will tie all product licenses for the serial number to the computer it is installed onto, in this case the other products contained in Building Design Suite Ultimate, even though only one product was installed.

The opposite is not true. You can’t use a Building Design Suite Ultimate to install your Navisworks Manage specific serial numbers. This means that you need to have the media for both and use the one that matches your serial number. If you want to try and use the media on hand, you can go ahead and launch the install and try the product key. If it accepted you can go ahead and use the media. If it is not accepted you will need to download the media that does match your product key.

Now, all of this only applies to standalone type licenses. The network installations are much more flexible since they do not have to be activated. If you are using network licenses you can install using any media, using the product key that matches the media. The software will then pull the “cheapest” available licenses no matter what media or product key was used to install it.

There is one exception to this. The “one-box” version of Revit that comes with the Building Design Suites is only sold as a part of the Building Design Suite. As a result it will bypass “cheaper” licenses for Revit Architecture, MEP, or Structure and only pull Building Design Suite licenses. If you want to use the “cheaper” licenses first, you will have to install using that matching media.

For your convenience, we have compiled a list of product keys for the currently supported Autodesk software.

Autodesk Navisworks 2013: New Features Focus

Teresa Martin, Senior Application Specialist, Ideate, Inc. reviews the best of the new features in Navisworks 2013.

Autodesk Navisworks 2013 has some fantastic enhancements this year. Two of the best new features are native Revit support (no more exporting via NWC from Revit!) and the display of levels and grids from Revit in a scene view. Both features have been high on user’s wish lists and this year Autodesk’s Navisworks team has delivered. The grids and levels can be turned on per level or all levels and can also be ghosted on levels above or below the designated level. For Navisworks project teams whom have been struggling with this issue by making their own 3D grids in either Revit or AutoCAD, this will be a most welcome feature.

Additional features that are worth a look are as follows:
  • Clash results that include locations by level as well as the grid reference.  Further, clash results may be sorted by level, proximity as well as grid location!
  • Costs can now be added to scheduled tasks in Timeliner
  • Ability to drag and drop search and/or selection sets directly into the task manager in Timerliner!  Huge time savings for creating simulations!
  • New Selection Inspector Tool for finding objects.
  • Vault integration
  • Additional file support for Primavera P6 v8, Archicad 14 and 15 as well as Faro 4.8.

MEP Content Display Settings in AutoCAD MEP and Navisworks

Recently I ran into a support case with a customer where they were bringing their AutoCAD MEP drawing into Navisworks 2012 (which by the way now supports native .DWGs, no more NWDOUT from AutoCAD). Everything looked good except for their pipe. It was coming in as a line instead of a 3D object. The solution as it turned out was fairly simple, but because of the myriad of visual settings in both applications it could’ve been easily missed.

I took a look at their CAD file and it looked pretty standard, and didn’t find anything wrong with it. But when I opened the file in Navisworks this is what I saw.

All other MEP content like duct, cable tray, and conduit were displaying as they should, except for pipe.

The view settings on the Navisworks end looked fine, so I went back to the DWG in AutoCAD MEP and dug a little deeper. As it turned out, the office CAD standards specified that all piping less than 12" diameter would be represented as a single line. The setting can be found in the Pipe System Definition and  affects all views including any view in and out of AutoCAD, such as Navisworks. I opened up the Pipe System Definition for that pipe and and unchecked the single line display boxes under the Single Line Graphics tab; saved the drawing and brought it back into Navisworks. Everything looked good. All MEP content, including pipe, were now displaying as 3D.

Civil 3D Technology Preview – Corridor Solids for Civil 3D 2012

How do you import a Civil 3D corridor into Revit or Navisworks?

I was asked this question a couple of months ago while importing a Civil 3D surface into Revit for a user group presentation on Revit Civil 3D collaboration. A very valid question, considering that I was just importing a surface and that too as polyline contours.

There is no way to import a corridor into Revit… well not until the Corridor Solids for Civil 3D technology preview from Autodesk Labs came out. You can learn more about it from Autodesk Labs website.

Corridor Solids will allow you to convert a Civil 3D corridor subassembly into an AutoCAD 3D solid (actually an AutoCAD “body” object) so you can easily import it into Revit or Navisworks for presentation purposes and enhanced model collaboration.

To provide you with a quick example, I have a very basic road corridor in Civil 3D with a lane, curb and gutter, sidewalk and retaining wall per the figure below:

Access Corridor Solids from the Toolbox and choose to import the solids in the same drawing or a new drawing.

Once you add all Baseline Regions you will see all the regions with their subassemblies in the dialog box.

The key here is to assign the right colors and layer names under the layer name template column so you see them in Revit and Navisworks.

And finally save the corridors solids in the same file or external file.

Now it’s easy to bring this Corridor Solids file into Revit via Linking CAD

or Navisworks via Appending the corridor solids drawing file.

Caveat:
  1. Corridor Solids will not export link subassemblies as solids. In those situations, you will see holes where there are links in your corridor and you will not be able to convert daylight or link subassemblies.
  2. I have not been able to assign materials or cut a section through corridor solids in Revit. However, I was able to assign materials to the various layers in pavement structure in Navisworks.
  3. Also, Labs software is a beta testing ground for Autodesk so sometimes things might not work as expected and there maybe bugs. In those situations it is best to communicate those things with Autodesk.

Matt Miyamoto, PE, Ideate Infrastructure Application Specialist

This lecture class is designed for the surveyor, engineer or planner who is interested in finding out more about the ground-mounted LiDAR scanning process.  Technological advancements have made it much easier for engineers and developers to gain access to LiDAR data.  In this class, we will take a look at some of the tools for LiDAR data collection, and discuss how ground-mounted data is collected, processed, and incorporated into a Civil 3D drawing via AutoCAD ® Civil 3D Point Cloud functionality.  Additionally, we will see how a Civil 3D Point Cloud object can be used to create an existing ground model for use in design or further evaluated in Autodesk Navisworks®.  If you’re interested in LiDAR technology, or have been working with LiDAR data and wonder where your data comes from, this class is for you.

Shop Drawings in Revit: What? It Can Do That?: Session ID: SE2745

Ron Palma, Ideate AEC Application Specialist

Do you have a need to create shop or assembly drawings of building materials within Revit Architecture or Revit Structure? Have you been drawing 2D shop drawings in drafting views without the benefit of live views in the building model? Or have you created “live” views of your model and then resorted to visibility graphic manipulation to isolate what it is you are trying to document? If so, this class is for you. The class focuses on helping you create shop drawings of your designs using the new Parts, Assemblies, and Assembly drawing tools in Revit Architecture and Revit Structure 2012.

2D to 3D: Transitioning Documentation from AutoCAD to Revit: Session ID: SE7280 –U (Part of AU 2011 Unconference Sessions)

This unconference session will be focused on the transitions you must consider when moving from 2D documentation to 3D documentation. Additional topics will include making use of BIM in the structural engineering documentation process, how we may consider presenting designs and documents in new ways beyond the traditional 2D views, and considerations in getting other BIM team members involved in the integrated project delivery (IPD) process.

How Suite It is! Leveraging Autodesk Design Suites from Schematic Design to Construction: Session ID: AB4384-P

Teresa Martin, Ideate Senior Application Specialist

This class will focus on using Autodesk Design Suites to leverage your workflow process from its humble napkin-sketch beginning to a means and method construction model as well as post-occupancy usage. We will discuss Autodesk Revit, 3ds Max Design, Navisworks, and Quantity Takeoff.

Adopting Lean Processes in BIM: Session ID: BO2507

David Haynes, AIA, LEED AP, Ideate Director of Consulting

This session is aimed at Business Owners, and Firm Principals to highlight the next step in BIM Business Transition

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has given architects, engineers, and contractors new tools and revised workflow processes that should translate to higher profits. Some firms are realizing gains and some are finding them elusive. This class will explore the issues involved and discuss how adopting Lean processes can increase profitability and efficiency, decrease issues, and create a better total “design and build” experience for the client. The class will explore how to translate success in Lean practices (mostly in the manufacturing world) to the service-oriented world of architecture and engineering. These changes in workflow and business practices require a new look at how we do project design and documentation.

Congratulations to these Ideate presenters to Autodesk University 2011. See you at AU2011 in Las Vegas. See Ideate at its Ideate BIMLink booth (#806).

Study in Success - California Lottery Wins Big with Integrated Project Delivery

Ideate is proud to announce publication of its latest Study in Success entitled California Lottery Wins Big with Integrated Project Delivery.

The subject of the study is the California Lottery Headquarters. The Ideate developed Study in Success details how the technology-reliant process of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) facilitated the successful creation of the six-story, 155,000-square-foot headquarters project throughout the phases of design, fabrication, and construction.

As a green building project, the California Lottery Headquarters project was to meet standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It was also the first IPD mandated project for the California Lottery. The project partners – LPAS Architecture + Design, Buehler & Buehler Structural Engineers, Inc., Interface Engineering, Architectural Glass & Aluminum and Otto Construction – formed a collaborative IPD alliance. Ideate, Inc. assisted with training and consulting in Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions including software, technical support, training and consulting.

Excerpts from California Lottery Wins Big with Integrated Project Delivery
According to AGA Project Manager David Peck, “When we would come to the weekly IPD meeting, we would have as many as 30 items to discuss. And, each issue would be discussed. None would linger past two weeks. We see this as a double win. The separate trades don’t wind up having to explain added costs because there are no added costs. There’s no finger pointing. And the owner gets exactly what is expected and paid for.”

Gregory Jones, Project Architect, LPAS, remembers, “Ideate provided us with focused training on how best to translate the design effort we had done in SketchUp to Revit. From this great starting point, we were able to overcome the challenges of modeling a very complicated curtain wall and ultimately our efforts were rewarded in receiving the AIA Divine Detail Award for the way we were able to resolve the curving and stepping planes of the curtain wall.”

“With the IPD process, we were able to shave two months off the schedule.” —Brady Smith, Principal, LPAS

The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule and is on track for LEED Gold certification.
