Working Together - Revit + Showcase

At Ideate, we often are asked about the 'other' products that are included in Building Design Suites. One of the un-sung products is Autodesk Showcase.

PROBLEM: How do I show my Revit model in a more realistic environment? Plus I want to not show the whole model; How do I show a section cut through the model to illustrate how the architectural spaces interact?

ANSWER: Use interoperability within the Building Design Suite – with the use of Autodesk Showcase. Section Box functionality within Revit and interoperability with Showcase gives AEC firms new workflow options.

A section box can be used in Revit to limit the visibility of objects, especially useful in a large project! As part of the Autodesk Building Suite with its new workflow options, you can now use the section box to quickly cut through a model, take it into Showcase and produce fast renderings. Very cool!

Windows 8 and Autodesk Products

Each time a new operating system arrives, customers ask us at Ideate about compatibility. As some of you know, Microsoft is releasing Microsoft Windows 8 on October 26, 2012.

The new operating system has many changes, a new user interface, and a lot of features that will be geared toward customers using tablets. Also, new computers purchased will be able to be pre-loaded with Windows 8.

QUESTION: Will my Autodesk products be able to run on Windows 8?

ANSWER: An unqualified kinda/sorta! Officially, as of October 22, 2012, Autodesk does not support Windows 8 Operating System. What does that mean?

  • It does not mean that you cannot load, or run certain Autodesk products.
  • It means that any technical support questions, whether to Autodesk or Ideate, could not be answered due to an unsupported operating system.
Ideate has done some testing on the consumer preview beta of Windows 8 and found that Revit 2013 would load (after SP2 was installed), however, Navisworks Manage 2013 would only load as far as the splash screen – so definitely user beware. Ideate’s recommendation, for now, is to hold off any production implementation of Windows 8 and Autodesk products.

Stay tuned to this blog and Twitter for further late-breaking news.

Autodesk Revit Database Management and Ideate BIMLink

A customer recently asked us for information about using Ideate BIMLink in conjunction with MS Access. Before I share information about how this can be done, I’ll outline some important information about how Revit can connect, out-of-the-box, with an Access database. Revit is a database of building information and this information, or at least a portion of it, can be exported to ODBC which can in turn be opened within Access. You can learn more about this process in the Wiki.

This process is one-way, meaning that the data can leave Revit via Export, but there is no corresponding import. This is most useful as a way to manage data that can logically remain separate from the building objects, such as construction cost data or for managing HR data relative to spatial data.

For people who are interested in a more fluid, two-way data exchange, Autodesk also provides a free tool for subscription owners, called Revit DB Link. This tool permits both an import and an export and can be used for a wider variety of tasks. A common usage might include editing volumes of Room- or Space-based parameters within Access and then importing the changes back to Revit. I should clarify that this tool does not permit a “live link” between Revit and Access, meaning that both the import and the export processes within Revit are manual. It should also be noted that for 64-bit users, the setup for the MS Access will require a 64-bit ODBC driver which wasn’t provided by Microsoft until the release of Office 2010. You can learn more about the setup on this 2010 Typepad Blog (recent Autodesk posts imply that this information is still valid).

Ideate BIMLink also provides and import/export capability but is aimed at the average user who does not want to setup an Access database or who has found that the Revit DB Link tool cannot manage the volume or type of data needed for a specific task. Excel provides a simple and elegant way to manage the large volumes of data within the Revit project. This chart explains some of the differences between Revit DB Link and Ideate BIMLink.

Now, back to the question at hand… can you use Ideate BIMLink with MS Access? You can, here’s how: http://www.screencast.com/t/ayYInfVSg. I think the primary reason you might consider this workflow is that Ideate BIMLink lets you deal with smaller chunks of data and, again, does not require Access knowledge. The Revit user or consultant can manage a small chunk of the database within Excel. For example, they could fill out important COBie-related fields for specialty equipment items then handover that chunk of Excel-based data for incorporation into the larger, Access database. Ideate BIMLink uses the Type and Instance IDs as the database “key” to help coordinate the information between the Building Model and the database model. It’s the right tool for keeping it simple and fast.

Setting a View as the Default View When Opening a Revit Project

The other day I was creating some training datasets and I wanted to be able to open the dataset to a predefined view. I remembered that beginning in Revit 2012 this was possible but for the life of me I could not find it in Revit 2013. I knew it had to be in the Manage tab somewhere. After looking at each tool icon I found the tool under the Manage tab>>Manage Project  panel>>Starting View Tool.

Once this tool is selected the Starting View dialog box is displayed. The default view to be opened is the Last Viewed. So whatever view was last opened when the file is saved is the first view that is opened. Depending upon the view this may cause Revit to take some time opening the file. For example a Realistically shaded view with shadows  turned on will take longer to open than a drafting view with some text.

In the Starting View dialog box, pick the drop-down list and select the desired view in the model to be opened by default each time you open the project. Many companies will create a Drafting View that includes the project name, and specific criteria about the project and perhaps brief instructions on how the Revit file is to be used, then set the view as the starting view. This drafting view does not include any graphics and serves two purposes.
  1. If set as the starting view, it enables Revit to load the view quicker when opening the project.
  2. If the file is saved with this view current, the file size of the Revit project will be smaller as the preview does not include any graphics. You would be amazed at the file size difference from saving the file with the drafting view current compared to a 3D shaded and shadowed view current.
So be sure to set a default view that will be opened up when starting a project. This may give you the benefit of being a little efficient when working with Revit.

Civil 3D 2013 Pressure Network Parts - Part 3

In our previous two Pressure Network Part blogs, my Ideate, Inc. colleague and friend Matt Miyamoto wrote about how to create a pressure network part from an AutoCAD 3dsolid object and export it to a .CONTENT file, then import the .CONTENT file into the content catalog. In Part Three, we go over the process for adding the new part to the Pressure Network Parts List for use in your Civil 3D drawing.

So, in short, the summary of the previous process:
  1. Create an AutoCAD 3dsolid or import a block that contains 3dsolid object for the part required.
  2. Insert/Create Autodesk Connection Point (ACP) object/(s)
  3. Publish the part and save it in its .CONTENT file
  4. Open Content Catalog Editor from Windows Start menu and import the .CONTENT file in the and save the pressure network catalog database .SQLITE file (before importing be sure to backup the out of the box original .SQLITE file)
Pressure Network blog post Part 1 encompasses step 1, 2 and 3 above and Part 2 elaborates on step 4.

In this post I will show you Step 5 -  i.e. how to import the catalog part into pressure network parts list within Civil 3D so you can use it in your design.

Importing the Custom Part into Civil 3D Pressure Network Parts List

1. Open a drawing within Civil 3D and navigate to Home > Create Design > Set Pressure Pipe Network Catalog.

2. Set the appropriate Pressure Network Catalog (.SQLITE file that you saved earlier in step 4 per our blog post Part 2). Hopefully you have backed up the original - you can see I backed up mine.

3. Edit the existing Part List or create a new one. I am editing the existing pressure network parts list “Water” (found in the default Civil 3D Imperial template) in this example. Go to Toolspace > Settings > Pressure Network > Parts Lists > Water: right click and chose Edit.

4. I am trying to create a fire hydrant so I will be adding it in the Pressure Network Parts List > Appurtenances tab

5. Right click on Water and click on Add type, pick “hydrant” or whatever name you gave to the part family. Right click on the hydrant and add the hydrant/part you created.

6. Finally, choose the hydrant/part you created by creating a new or editing an existing pressure network; under Plan Layout tab click on Add Appurtenances

You can find more information in the Part Publishing Wizard User Guide saved with the default Civil 3D install at the following location: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013\Sample\Civil 3D API\Part Publishing Wizard\PartPublishingWizardUsersGuide.docx.

Lastly, please keep in mind that customization is generally unsupported by Autodesk and Ideate Technical Support so a lot of trial and error and testing may be involved in the Pressure Part creation process.

What the Heck is Autodesk SketchBook Designer 2013?!

If you bought any Autodesk Suites product, and I mean, any: Building, Infrastructure, Product , Plant, Factory, Entertainment or General Design. And any flavor: Standard, Premium or Ultimate - you own SketchBook Designer 2013. Ideate has been reviewing what Sketchbook Designer can do.

So again, if you bought any suite from Autodesk you have a copy of SketchBook Designer.

Now the question is: What is it? And how do you use it? Read on to find out.

What It Is and How It Helps
In simplest terms, SketchBook Designer gives you tools to create conceptual not-to-scale freehand sketches on top of your AutoCAD plans/linework or photographs.

Click here for more information from the Autodesk SketchBook Designer product page on autodesk.com.

That was simple! Right. So let’s delve deeper.

What is SketchBook Designer Ribbon Tab Within AutoCAD?

You will see a SketchBook Designer tab within AutoCAD if you installed the standalone product or via any of the suites. And you guessed it, it’s that simple - SketchBook Designer LT embedded in AutoCAD. Well, sort of! The Sketchbook Designer tab actually gives you tools to create and edit a canvas and that’s it. For any further conceptual sketches you would need to open the drawing file (.DWG) in standalone SketchBook Designer. Here is an extract verbatim from SketchBook Designer Help:

Welcome to SketchBook Designer for AutoCAD, an AutoCAD add-in application. Create canvases in AutoCAD, bring them into SketchBook Designer, to create sketches and creative concepts. Eventually, bring your content back into the AutoCAD environment, where you can interact with it.

SketchBook Designer and SketchBook Pro
Yes! There are two flavors - what are they and which one to use? When you open the SketchBook Designer 2013 you are given an option to choose between the two flavors as below.

SketchBook Designer 2013
has the option to import a drawing file as you can see from the image below. Think of SketchBook Designer at Autodesk SketchBook Pro LT.

Autodesk SketchBook Pro opens image files as below. It is a full blown image editing software - actually more for illustrations and conceptual sketching. For the purpose of understanding, an example of similar image editing software is Adobe Photoshop.

Where Autodesk SketchBook Pro delivers a powerful toolset and fluid freehand drawing experience for professional artists, designers and illustrators helping them sketch, paint, draw and unleash their creativity, SketchBook Designer is a hybrid paint and vector environment, helping enable greater precision and powerful modification capabilities that are ideal both for mouse-based interactions as well as freehand pen-based input.

SketchBook Mobile and Sketchbook Mobile Express for iPad, iPhone and Android
SketchBook Mobile is a paint and drawing application offering a full set of sketching tools and a streamlined and intuitive user interface for your iPad, iPhone and Android devices. Click here to get more information. Sketchbook Mobile Express is a Free app giving you a small subset of the Sketchbook Pro functionality.

Conclusion

To conclude here is a summary of this discussion:

Sketchbook Pro is a full-blown image editing software.

Sketchbook Designer 2013 is “similar” to Sketchbook Pro LT.

Sketchbook Designer 2013 is embedded ribbon tab within AutoCAD 2013 lets you create/edit a canvas.

Sketchbook Pro is available on iPad, iPhone and Android in 2 flavors - Sketchbook Mobile and the free version Sketchbook Mobile Express.

Now remember the reason we are talking about this is because if you own any Autodesk Suite product you have Sketchbook Designer 2013. Now Click here to find out more about it and Use it.
