Don't Miss Your Autodesk Product Updates - Check Your Settings!

What is the Communication Center in your Autodesk product?
The Communication Center provides up-to-date product support information, software patches, subscription announcements, articles, and other product information through a connection to the Internet.

In the Communication Center, the Autodesk default setting is to hide notifications older than 14 days. We think this is a little short and recommend increasing the time to 30 days or even turn this setting off altogether. That way you'll always be current with any product updates and discussion groups.

Configure Communication Center
To receive the latest software updates, product support announcements, and maintenance patches, configure the Communication Center to your preferred settings.

At the right end of the status bar, click the Live Update icon.
- To enable the Live Update feature, select the Specify your country and preferred update frequency option, or click Settings.
- Apply your changes. A check mark appears in front of the Specify your country and preferred update frequency option. The Connect to the Internet and download available information option is activated.
- Select the Connect to the Internet and download available information option. You can also click Refresh Content to download the latest updates and announcements.
- The Communication Center Status notifies you that a download is in progress. When the download is complete, a check mark appears in front of the Connect to the Internet and download available information option. The Specify which information channels you want to view option is activated.
- Select the Specify which information channels you want to view option to specify the channels you want to view in the Communication Center.
- Select the channel names for the information you want to receive.
- Apply your changes. If you do not select any channels before selecting OK, you are prompted to select one or more information channels before information can be downloaded.
- The Communication Center dialog box notifies you that your product is up to date and provides links to your preferred channel information.

Enjoy!

Project Highlight: UC Davis Wine & Beer Laboratory by KPW Structural Engineers

Ideate is proud to work with KPW, Structural Engineer of Record for the new state-of-the-art Research and Teaching Winery, Brewery, and Food Service Laboratory University of California, Davis.

KPW, teaming with BN Builders and Flad Architects, worked closely with the University to deliver the $16M, Design-Build laboratory and teaching facility. The new facility will be used for scientific research, student training, and industry collaboration. This 34,000-square-foot building will house a food processing pilot plant, a dairy processing facility, pilot brewery, and a platform for experimentation in wine processing. From the start, REVIT was used as the BIM platform to assure full coordination between structural, architectural, mechanical and the complex process system requirements prior to the start of construction. KPW's innovative approach to structural efficiency virtually eliminated field welding and provided 60 ft. clear spans throughout the structure. This will be the first LEED Platinum Winery, the first LEED Platinum Brewery, and the third LEED Platinum project for the UC system.

A recent edition of the UC Davis Spotlight described the project features.

Autodesk Revit Tips - Fix Navisworks File Exporter Errors

From Autodesk Revit Architecture Services & Support:

In Revit, the Navisworks File Exporter is grayed out on the ribbon menu
ID: TS15175410

Issue
When you attempt to access the Navisworks exporter from the Revit > Add-ins > External Tools menu option, the Navisworks 2011/2010 option is grayed out and unusable.

Solution
In order for the exporters to be selectable and usable in Revit, you need to ensure the following:

1.) You are in a 3d view of your model

2.) You do not have a building tool selected (press escape to exit out of any active tool)

Now, when you click Revit > Add-ins > External Tools, the Navisworks 2010/2011 option should be available for use.

When you attempt to use the Navisworks exporter in Revit, a “localization” error displays.
ID: TS15175458
Issue
When you attempt to access the Navisworks exporter from the Revit > Add-ins > External Tools menu option, a “localization” error displays and the export does not occur.

Solution
Occasionally, the Revit exporter does not initialize properly during installation. A repair of the exporter should correct the issue.

Ideate Gives Back - Bike First! Event

Ideate is proud to be an active member of our local communities, through both our support of professional associations like the AIA and AGC, and individual volunteer efforts.

Craig H. Dodge, Ideate Director of Sales, and his family will volunteer at the upcoming Bike First! Event in Northeast Portland, joining Shawn Sullivan, AIA and his family. Ideate has been a sponsor of the Bike First! clinic for people with disabilities since 2007. Craig notes, “I volunteer – as do my wife Kim and our girls. It’s a good community cause which makes a big difference for the kids and parents involved. We enjoy the family component (and I like the t-shirt!)”
Riding a bike is something most of us take for granted. We learn to do it for fun as a kid, and as we grow up, it becomes a form of transportation, recreation or even competition. For people with disabilities, it’s not that easy. Bike First! uses specially developed bicycles on rollers to teach children and adults with special needs how to ride a traditional bicycle. Dozens of volunteers act as spotters, running alongside, encouraging and training the cyclists as they learn to ride on their own.

“In just one week, we typically help the majority of our participants learn to ride a real bicycle, on two wheels,” explains Ann Donaca-Sullivan, Bike First! Clinic Director. “You’ve never seen smiles on so many faces, including all of the volunteers.”

Highlights from GreenBIM Conference (Boston)

Submitted by Glynnis Patterson, N.C.A.R.B. – Ideate Director of Services

I recently attended the GreenBIM Conference in Boston which was put on by McGraw-Hill Construction. It was a great one-day conference with presentations focused on how building information modeling is having a positive impact on sustainability and energy efficiency. The presenters included government representatives, researchers (building performance), and building and MEP contractors.
Keynote: Regulatory drivers in Sustainability and BIM by John Dalzell, Senior Architect for the Boston Redevelopment Authority
• Boston has implemented a Green Building Zoning code (Article 37) which is similar to the code in San Francisco.
• Boston is looking at LEED ND (Neighborhood Design) to drive sustainability through street layout and making alternate modes of transportation possible.

Case Study: Shanghai Tower by Ken Sanders, Managing Director, Gensler
• Able to reduce wind load by 24% by making a smooth building envelope, plus saved $50 million in structural material costs. BIM is making these kinds of analysis possible.

Impacts of BIM-Enabled Prefab on Sustainable Construction by John Cannistraro, Jr., President, J. C. Cannistraro, LLC
• IPD/Contractor for Autodesk’s headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts (MEP)
• Cannistraro took the time to review the cost of change orders for hundreds of jobs over the past 6 years and found that more collaborative BIM led to a significant reduction in the cost and number of change orders (from 24% of the base contract cost down to 2%).

Case Study: Empire State Building Retrofit by Paul Rode, Project Executive, Solutions Division, Johnson Controls
• The retrofit is geared towards reducing the energy costs from $11M to $4M per year.
• Providing wireless thermostats was one of the simplest and cost effective measures possible.
• Providing user feedback loop online also helps in lowering costs.

In addition to partially fulfilling my 2011 architectural license renewal requirements, the conference provided me with a more rounded understanding of how BIM is impacting non-architectural players. The presentations noted highlight that with a few key choices in design, collaboration or products, it is possible to have a dramatic affect on sustainability.

Glynnis is a Registered Architect and has worked within the BIM industry since 1998. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, she has worked as an architect, educator and construction site manager. Glynnis is currently the Director of Development Services at Ideate, Inc. and continues to work with AEC clients across the nation, developing, and implementing best practices solutions. In her spare time Glynnis is a member of the Morristown Environmental Commission and builds Lego projects.

Free Webinar, June 15: Automation Innovations in Stormwater Modeling

Water, storm water, and wastewater utilities and their engineering design and construction partners are under increasing pressure to do more with less, while maintaining the highest level of service and reliability. With aging assets and capital constraints, experts agree that the future of water resources engineering will present challenges unseen by today’s professionals.

CE News and Autodesk have put together an informative 3-part series which address some water industry challenges and solutions, as well as transparency and accountability.

Don't miss the upcoming June 15 webcast: Automation Innovations in Stormwater Modeling
Automation innovations in Autodesk’s recently released water resource engineering software allows civil engineers to more efficiently and economically complete stormwater analysis and design projects. This presentation showcases a stormwater project in which a major engineering firm was able to complete a 30 square mile metropolitan stormwater management plan in half of the time that it would normally have taken. This project incorporated wetlands, ponds, streams, and stormwater pipe and ditch networks, and the stormwater management plan had to accommodate 10 and 100-year storms and comply with city, county, state and federal EPA standards. This project was completed within 5 weeks, using a variety of CAD and GIS source data to construct the model. The final model was turned over to the city stormwater utility department to use on future projects, particularly in evaluating the impact of new developments on existing structures.

Register here for the June 15 webcast, scheduled at 1:00pm EDT, 12:00pm CDT, 10am PDT.

Autodesk Tip - FLEXnet® feature codes for Autodesk 2011 Products

From Autodesk Services & Support:

Issue
You want information about FLEXnet® feature codes for Autodesk 2011 products.

Solution

When you start the network version of an Autodesk product, a request is made to the network for a license. The Network License Manager controls the licenses that are issued and handles license requests through feature codes. Feature codes are specific to the networked application. Any network version of an Autodesk product has a specific FLEXnet® feature code.

Feature codes are necessary because the Network License Manager is designed to administer licenses for multiple Autodesk applications. An example of feature code usage in a log file entry is shown below.

Sample log file entry:

11:00:04 (adskflex) OUT: "40100ARCHDESK_3_3F" user@hostname

Revit Structure: RISA-Revit 2011 Link

Revit Structure users can leverage the power of BIM by synchronizing Revit Structure models with RISA-3D and/or RISAFloor.

This two-way link is compatible with Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 (both 32 and 64 bit versions) and allows you to transfer information more seamlessly than ever between Revit and RISAFloor or RISA-3D.
  • New models can be created in either Revit Structure or RISA software using the information available in the other program.
  • All geometric and design information including materials, family instances, walls, slabs, openings, grid lines, boundary conditions, footings, loads and load combinations can be created/updated/deleted in either of the two programs using the information available in the other program.
  • The new exchange file method allows continuity of data flow throughout the exchange cycle.
  • Users can add new elements and/or additional design to the RISA model and these changes will be retained in RISA while round-tripping.
  • The robust Excel based XML mapping file provides the capability to customize the processing of shapes, materials and load cases.
  • A log file is created during every export/import operation giving a synopsis on the number of elements translated and errors/warnings encountered, if any.

A free download is available for both RISAFloor and RISA-3D users. Visit www.risatech.com/revitstructure to download the new link now.
