Great event by Portland CSI at ZGF's Office
This month's Portland CSI chapter meeting was a Project Tour of the new Twelve West building. We had a chance to meet the architects responsible for the design, representatives of Hoffman Construction and key subcontractors. It was fascinating to learn about everything from the siting (choosing the less traveled side of Burnside), to the distinctive entry staircase to the carefully chosen materials. It is a thoughtful and well executed project, designed for long-term sustainability.
The tour concluded with a presentation by John Breashears and Craig Briscoe of ZGF on the wind turbines atop the Twelve West building. With no precedent for wind turbines on a tall building in an urban environment, the ZGF project team had to forge their own path - learning about turbine technology, wind patterns, construction techniques...you name it. The result is a set of four wind turbines that will produce enough electricity to power five of the building's residential apartments. What is almost more important than the resulting power generation, is the fact that turbines are there and will be tracked over time - a reference point and baseline for future projects.

Rising 23 stories above Portland, Oregon’s evolving West End neighborhood, TwelveWest is a mixed-use building designed to meet two LEED Platinum Certifications and serve as a laboratory for integrated sustainable design. It features street level retail space, four floors of office space for ZGF Architects LLP, 17 floors of “eco-chic,” homes for lease and five levels of below grade parking. The building has an eco-roof, rooftop garden and terrace space, complete fitness studio and a theatre. Four visible wind turbines sit high atop the building representing the first U.S. installation of small-scale wind turbines in an urban, high-rise. TwelveWest serves as not only an anchor in a rapidly transforming urban neighborhood, but also as a demonstration project to inform future sustainable building design.

The Solar Decathlon Begins Today!

The Solar Decathlon begins today!
After two years of planning, designing, engineering, and building, our SCU+CCA Team California is ready to welcome the world through the doors of Refract House on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.! Team California was one of only 9 teams (of the 20 participants) to pass all inspections in order to be eligible to begin competing today. More great news: Student Project Manager Allison Kopf (SCU ’11) has the honor of joining Energy Secretary Steven Chu to address the crowd at the Opening Ceremonies. And, as if that were not enough, SCU and CCA students were thrilled to learn that CBS will be interviewing Secretary Chu for its news program 60 Minutes (which boasts more than 9 million viewers!) in OUR SOLAR HOUSE this morning! We will post the air date and more information soon. Our student team is making us proud—working around the clock on getting the house ready for competition and visitors, talking with media, and preparing for the blitz that is the Solar Decathlon.
Sure to be a topic of buzz on the National Mall, one of the innovations being introduced in our 2009 entry is a carbon meter. Thanks to a grant from the California Energy Commission, Santa Clara University has been working with SolarTech (a PV industry consortium) to develop this concept. Over the past year, it has been developed and tested on SCU's campus on our 2007 Solar Decathlon entry, Ripple House. With great results being achieved, students were excited to install the meter on Refract House to measure carbon offsets at real-time rates. In the future, it is expected this type of monitoring will allow homeowners to be compensated for saving energy while contributing to the health of the planet, enabling a potential economy of carbon cap and trade.
