Did You Know When Working in Revit Design Options You Can…

Hi folks IX (#9) here. One of the Senior Application Specialist here at Ideate, Inc.

When working with Revit Design Options have you ever wanted to… Oh I don’t know…

• Edit an option without having to make that option the active option?

• Or have the ability to edit elements visible in the view while in a Design Option without having to toggle back to the Main Model or a different Design Option?

• Or even still you’re working in a Design Option and you like to Array, Copy, Offset, Mirror, or use the Rotate/Copy tools on elements in the view that resided outside the active Design Option without having to toggle back & forth between the Main Model/other Design Options and your active Design Option using the Copy to Clipboard/Paste tools?

Well you’re in luck you can!  Nope I’m not joking, teasing you or pulling your leg. You really can.

When working in a Revit Model with Design Options two workflow tools become active on the Status Bar to the right of the Design Option drop-up list “Exclude Options” & “Active Only”.

When working with Revit Design Options have you ever wanted to… Oh I don’t know…

Exclude Options:

• When checked (default) it prohibits users editing Design Options elements visible in the view while in the Main Model.

• When unchecked users are able to edit elements from a Design Option visible in the view without having to active the required Design Option.

Active Only:

• When checked (default) users are prohibited from selecting elements not in the active Design Option.

• When unchecked users are able to select elements shown in the view and Array, Copy, Offset, Mirror, or Rotate/Copy elements into the current design option whether the elements are within the active Design Option or not.

For users just getting started in Revit and working with Design Options the default settings are a great way for beginner to get comfortable working with Design Options and a great workflow for them.

For the more experienced Design Options user unchecking these options as needed can speed up your modeling efforts and increase your efficiency.

Enjoy this Design Options workflow tip and trick.

Cheers

IX

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Mid-Year Enhancements

Within the past month there were three enhancements to AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 that may have gone unnoticed by most Civil 3D users.  They were Service Pack 1, Productivity Pack 1, and subscription access to three Civil Design Modules.  Let's take a quick look at what they are.

Traditionally, service packs just resolve issues with the software. However, Civil 3D 2016 Service Pack 1 also includes improvements to the Export Civil 3D drawing utility and to 3D polyline linetype display.  These enhancements reduce post export cleanup for users who need to convert their Civil 3D drawings to DGN format.

Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1 includes several import/export tools to share design data between Civil 3D and Bentley InRoads-GEOPAK.  This is done via an online cloud service called the Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator.  Another tool in the pack that caught my attention was the Earthworks Plan Production tool. This tool automates the insertion of earthworks data labels in a grid pattern previously accomplished through several manual steps.

Tools in the new Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1

To get to Civil 3D Productivity Pack 1, logon to your Autodesk Account and then select the Product Enhancements Quick Link. You can also install the productivity pack via the Autodesk Application Manager.

While you are logged in to Autodesk Account, you may want to get the three design modules that install on Civil 3D; Autodesk Geotechnical Module, Bridge Modeler Module, and the River and Flood Analysis Module.  To find them, select the Product Updates link.  Prior to August, these modules were accessible only to Infrastructure Design Suite Premium or Ultimate subscribers.

Civil 3D Productivity Pack 1 and the Autodesk Civil Design Modules improve productivity and increase the value of your Autodesk subscription. For more details, take a look at Autodesk's official post on how these enhancements improve Interoperability between Autodesk and Bentley Solutions.

WRNS Studio Keeps Revit Models Clean with Ideate Software

PRESS RELEASE
San Francisco, CA, 09/17/2015 – Ideate, a multi-decade veteran Autodesk Developer Network member and Autodesk Platinum Value Added Reseller, announced today the publication of its latest “Spotlight on” customer success profile featuring WRNS Studio and its use of Ideate Explorer for Revit modeling.
Ideate Software is a set of in-depth Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) data management tools that helps keep Revit models clean. With it, staff can delete problem items, analyze files quickly, and enhance BIM data flow with increased speed and accuracy. The software can facilitate better collaboration, minimize workflow interruptions, improve project deliverables, and elevate design.
Jason Halaby, Designer and BIM Manager, WRNS Studio, San Francisco, regularly uses Ideate Explorer to turn tedious Revit model projects into quick exercises. “You can hardly compare time savings now with how we did things before because there are things you simply cannot do without Ideate Explorer” says Halaby.
WRNS Studio cares deeply about the quality of their models, and Ideate Explorer helps the teams to keep their Revit models clean. Halaby uses Ideate Explorer to find and change elements, purge line styles that are not up to office standards, even add detail views from different projects into the WRNS file library. “Ideate Explorer is also outstanding at finding linked AutoCAD files that are otherwise hidden inside of a particular view,” he says.
Bob Palioca, President, Ideate Inc., says, “We know how critically important it is to keep Revit models clean and lean, especially as AEC projects become so massively complex. We are proud to able to contribute so significantly to our clients’ time savings and quality control by creating Ideate Explorer.”
Ideate has published “Ideate Software Presents: Spotlight on WRNS Studio” success story online. Download the WRNS Studio success study to learn more.
Ideate BIMLink and Ideate Explorer carry a five star rating, for managing Revit models, on the Autodesk Exchange Apps Store, and are available with a non-commercial free trial.

Hiding Color Fill Wall Boundaries in a Foreground Mode

I was recently presented a Revit tech support case in which a customer was interested in showing the color of their Color Fill Diagrams through the furniture in their space. Most Revit families contain masking regions so they can hide patterns and elements below them. For example, you may want your furniture to mask out the floor pattern below, so a masking region within a family will usually accomplish this task.

When Color Fill Locations are set to background, the colors from the diagram are masked out by the model components themselves, making the components pop out with a white color. For some offices, this is quite acceptable, but for others, this is not. Toggling the Color Fill Location (in the Properties Palette) to Foreground will place the color on top of the masking regions and wall patterns, revealing the true extent of the Color Fills. Unfortunately, the calculation point for the Color Fills are NOT governed by the Room Calculation Point, instead, they appear to be hard-coded and at the Wall Centerline, which may look funny to those that may be presenting color diagrams to their client.

So the question is this: How can we show Color Fill Diagrams in a Foreground mode (color over furniture, casework, etc.), yet ensure that the color stops at the face of walls, instead at the centerline of walls? The answer may be by using Filters!

In this example, we are looking at a Color Fill diagram with a Color Scheme Location set to Background. When set in this mode, the masking regions from the furniture (red arrows) and the wall patterns (blue arrows) mask out the edges (green arrow) of the color fills. While this look may be appropriate, some people may opt to have the color on top of the furniture, hiding the white masking regions.

In this next example, we are looking at a Color Fill diagram with a Color Scheme Location set to Foreground. When set in this mode, the masking regions from the furniture (red arrows) and the wall patterns (blue arrows) are underneath the Color Fill, allowing the color to be the dominant feature. While this look may be appropriate, many people want the Wall patterns to be in the Foreground, covering up the centerline of the Color Fill. Presently, there are no options to define where the Color Fill boundaries calculate, thus they appear at the wall centerlines.

One of the ways in which we can keep the Color Fill Diagram in the Foreground (removing the masking regions at the furniture, casework, etc.) AND remove the look of the Color Fill boundaries at the wall centerlines is with the use of Filters. Luckily for us, Filters will trump some of the Color Fill Settings, allowing the wall patterns to be the dominant force. Since we wanted all walls to have the same pattern, we decided to not use any filter criteria. You may need to define several filters if you want to have a combination of wall overrides.

Once the filter has been defined, go to the Color Fill view, bring up the Visibility/Graphics Dialogue box and bring up the wall filter. Set the Wall Pattern Overrides to the color and pattern of your desire and then verify the results. In this example, we set the color to White and the Pattern to Solid. If you are going to create several color fill diagrams, you may want to consider adding the filter settings to a View Template for consistency.

With the newly applied Wall Filter in place and the Color Scheme Location set to Foreground,  you can see the Wall pattern overrides dominate the Color Fill Centerlines (no longer showing, as indicated by the green arrows), while the furniture (red arrows) is covered up with the color from the Color Fill Diagrams. The Color Fill Diagram appears to be calculating at the wall faces (blue arrows), which looks more appropriate than the Figure 2 image above.

Revit 2016 Rotate Project North

One of the improvements in Revit 2016 is the enhancement of the Rotate Project North tool.

In previous versions of Revit, the Rotate Project North tool worked primarily for model elements. The tool did not allow for the rotation of view-specific detail elements.

The enhanced Rotate Project North tool in Revit 2016 now allows not only model elements to be rotated along with the project north, but view-specific detail elements as well. These include detail lines, filled regions, text notes, revision clouds, callouts and more. Please note however, that the improved tool is still only enabled for plan views whose orientation in the properties palette has been set to ‘Project North’.

Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Feature Comparison

Now that AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 is a few months into its release, more and more customers are evaluating the benefits of upgrading.  As an Autodesk Platinum Reseller, Ideate is always looking for information that can help our customers make the right decisions for their business.

One of the first places that I look for information on a new release is a Feature Comparison Matrix.  With each new release, Autodesk generally provides a link to a PDF or online document that lists a comparison of features from version to version.  Recently, one of our customers asked for a link to this for Civil 3D, and to my surprise, it was much harder to find than expected.  AutoCAD, Revit, and Design Suite links were easy to find, but Civil 3D did not show up in my initial search.

After some digging, I was able to find a Civil 3D specific feature comparison document available through a partner resource link from Autodesk.  Now that we have it, we’re posting it here to share with everyone else.

As a quick reference, here’s a list of new features and enhancements from the 2015 to 2016 versions of Civil 3D:

Project Management:

• Manage Data Shortcuts to repair broken shortcuts and replace DWG objects

• Display vault project objects that exist in subfolders within object type

• Create data references to objects that exist in different vault projects

Collaboration and Data Exchange:

• Import and Export IFC (Industry Foundation Class) Files

Corridor Modeling:

• Select alignments by layer to be used as width and targets

Sections & Section Views:

• Control the direction of sections in section views

Subassembly Composer:

• Loop geometry support

Pipe Networks:

• Create exclusionary catchments

Annotation:

• Crossing pipe and pressure pipe profile view labels

• Pressure pipe labels in section views
